I've got a great Steve story.

The morning after the 2003 RWC Final win, I thought 'we should go into Manly and see if anything is going on'.

Well, there certainly was. We couldn't even drive down the beach road outside the (iconic) Manly Pacific Hotel (selected by ex-Manly boy, SCW) because the road was closed while 10000 poms blocked it with singing Queen's hit song, 'We are the champions' up at the hotel windows, hoping Jonny etc would emerge

Anyhoo, we drove (awe inspired) and in a cinematic slow-motion through this positive-dystopian movie scene, people banging on the windows, cops waving us through, sound intermittent/fragmented even, just like a movie you'd imagine they'll make about it.

But then, amongst this throng, emerges a man

A large man, perhaps even a chubby man, with a long surfboard and a wetsuit rolled down to his waist, exposing his glorious English yeoman moobs. He's nodding slo-mo at the 'people' while the English girls slowly recognise that today, he's not just another chubster tourist and beginner-surfer, instead, today, he's England's heroic Hooker, Steve, 'Stevo' Thompson, out for a quiet surf before the nonsense starts

Stevo looks at me (in my car, driving by) and gives me that knowing, smiling, half-nod in slo-mo like they do in movie end-scenes. At that moment, we're all English, at that moment, we're all Stevo, we're all world champs.

...

God bless him.

I’d put current England hooker Jamie “fattie” George in the team ahead of Stephen Moore. Moore was Aussie captain. Far from dopey or even dopey looking.

All this discussion about who is the dopiest looking loose forward and meanwhile Thomas Waldrom is briskly walking away whistling.

I submit Rodney Ah You at tighthead based entirely on the levels of dopiness required to find yourself in this position in a scrum

Thanks.

Chris Robshaw can feel rightly aggrieved to be named at 7.

He's a veritable dreamboat compared to the rest of this cast of Freaks and Geeks.

He plays 14 or 15, so say 15. Wouldn't want to see Cuthbert losing out.
