Modern vacuum cleaners Suck! Or rather, they don’t....

Post by backrow »

Fudge me - why are modern vacuum cleaners so shite?
Our old Phillips one - cleaned nicely, did 10 years no bother before giving up the ghost. Got a cheapo £20 one from Tesco as stop gap as we had a party, it hoovered up dust ok (not as good as the Phillips one) but had shitty plastic pipes and short lead so we gave it to a tenant.
Brother has had 4 dysons, they seem to break and don’t clean any better than a normal cleaner so didn’t get one of those. Got some Vax thingy that looks good in the store - but it is shite:

Short pipe so I’m bent over lots
Gets clogged easily and loses suction every 5 mins
Can’t take the end brush off easily for when you just want the pipe end to get into corners
But worst of all, it just doesn’t seem to suck much dirt and bits up ! Why are hoovers getting less good at their job compared to vacuums from the 1980’s we had growing up that could lift small kids up ?!

This lockdown is getting to me I think, ranting on the internet about shitty modern appliances :frown:

Surely Dyson is the brand for you? You can complain about the EU using a product from another anti-EU bell-end.

You missed then where I said they seem to break and don’t appear to me when I’ve used them to suck any more efficiently. That, and £400 price tag, means I’ve stayed away.

Shark does a brilliant job. Better than any dyson we had previously.

Can buy 3 of these for every top end dyson.

We used to have dysons but they got increasingly shittier with every new model. Gave the last one away and went for a shark. Despite having just vacuumed with the dyson the new shark went over the place like it had never been touched.

The Miele is going strong after 10 years. I like the sensor with light that turns from red to green when you have sufficiently hoovered a given area.

The problem with modern hoovers is that they've moved away from the bag system that forced you to change and clean. Now folks just empty the receiver and seem to expect the filter to clean itself.

We've a vax and it cleans pretty well if you change out the filters regularly. As a bonus, you can actually wash them too to get a bit more out of them.

Don't get me started on fvcking Dyson.

Was staying at a pretty schmick Airbnb and they had a Dyson.

Looked like a space invader.

Got a few crumbs on the floor and broke it out.

Couldn't even work out how to start the fvcking thing.

Put it back. Clean it up yourself, owner cvnt.

Agreed. Very happy with our shark. We’ve got a hoover and a steam cleaner from them and they’re great.

I'm on my second Dyson. The first one lasted >20 years with a couple of replacement parts. The new one has needed a new battery after 4 years and that's it so far.

They both clean much better than the hoover they replaced which was well built, but not actually good at cleaning.

We have a stick vac for our apartment at the mo, it's an Electrolux.

Goes well.

It replaced a Kmart number that was just a waste of time. The head didn't work so I had to nozzle clean the entire floor. Punted it at the next available hard rubbish collection.

I bought a commercial Pullman vacuum cleaner. It sucked like a very sucky thing for nearly 20 years, so when it finally weakened I bought another. Still good after 10 years.

Another vote for Shark.

Actually rang their customer support yesterday as a bit of plastic around the brushes had become slightly deformed and was causing a lot of noise, no messing about, a new foot section was delivered today, great customer service.

I remember their argument being that the power of the suction is a result of atmospheric pressure and not how hard the thing is trying. You could put a bus engine on a vacuum cleaner, but not experience any more suction. So they set a limit on motor size. Dysons are great if you can be arsed clearing the filters all the time. Clean the filters and it will lift up the carpet.

A few years ago I had one that literally caught on fire. First time in my life an electrical appliance has done that for me. Near shit myself.

In my rush to get it outside I accidently caught the cat in the suction (it was still working). The cat had PTSD for months after that. Was pretty clean though.

Now EU targets our kettles, toasters and even lawnmowers
THE British way of life is under fresh threat from the EU as it targets the nation's kettles, toasters and even lawnmowers.

2014

Campaigners last night rallied round to vent their fury as Brussels bureaucrats unveiled their latest plan to erode the "lifestyles and choices of ordinary people".

It follows the banning this week of vacuum cleaners which have motors above the new EU limit of 1,600 watts in a bid to cut energy usage.

The permitted wattage will be almost halved again from September 2017 as the limit is reduced to 900 watts.

It's not a Festool, but I do have a vacuum in my workshop (which sounds much grander than it really is), for sucking up sawdust and the like. As well as the attachments for fitting it to routers, band saws and the like, it came with the same sort of attachments that domestic cleaners have. I suspect if I tried it in the house, it would suck up the carpet and quite possibly the floorboards underneath as well.

My wife brought us a fancy stick dyson for Christmas. It cost over a grand and it's pretty poor, struggles with suction on certain surfaces. Waste of freakin $.

I don't get it. I've owned two Dyson over the last 19 years and they've been flawless. The only reason it's two us that the other half accidently spilled water all over the plug socket if the old machine.

Agree Miele are great. Bought one for my mother as a Christmas pressie and she loves it. She has had Miele over the years and it wins all the time.
I bought myself an expensive €500 Dyson. It’s very good, cordless, long battery life. Downside not great at cleaning by building dust! The Miele would be able to handle that job easy.

I remember there was a facebook group for mums that raved about a Kmart vacuum that was a tenth of the price of a Dyson that out performed it.
