The UK Garage thread

Post by SamShark »

No?

Fine just me then, but I'm happy to post a few links for myself.

Not sure there's any genre as temporal (is that the right word?) as UK garage - it only existed for a few years. It's also uniquely "UK". Anyway....

Classic

I used to quite enjoy a UK garage singalong to "Please Don't Turn Me On"

now this is kind of my forte... SS I trust you're listened to the People Just Do Nothing's Kurupt FM - The Lost Tape? If not, get on that right now.

I'm not sure it's right to talk about it in the (distant) past tense. I think Disclosure breathed some life into it with their first album, and then I stumble across newer artists like Conducta..

Anyway, I shall be following this thread with immense interest, probably while listening to Maximum Speed Vol 2! Back tomorrow to contribute some links...

Some absolute bangerz from the early days on this mix:

Double 99 Ripgroove is the epitome of that early sound, before it moved into the '2-step' /breakbeat stuff that started to invade the charts. I sort of lost track of dance music not long after this but I guess the more underground side of Speed Garage/2-step must have been an evolutionary step toward Dubstep. A lot of the elements came out of drum n' bass like MCs, the basslines, rewinds, the breakbeat itself of course, etc etc. Never really liked the scene in London that much, loads of attitude, but the music itself was great to dance to.

Usually the correct answer is ‘not a main dealer’

It would genuinely be more interesting than a garage music thread. Shame on Sam for starting it  :uhoh:

Just not ruggers is it, old fruit?

Garages are for beasting young rugby colts on the weights bench during lockdown - none of this ethnic music malarkey.
