With the Lockdown, it's obvious that a lot of TV Programmers are not very imaginative. The same films are always on and sometimes repeated on a different channel shortly thereafter.

Streaming services are also to blame - there is a niche market for a searchable back-catalog of movies.

One of the digital terrestrial channels here in Oz is finally working it out - over the last few weeks they've been playing stuff like Kelly's Heroes, Zulu, etc

Last night I watched "Black Sea" with Jude Law. Low budget for sure but it was actually quite good.

Any classics you'd want to see?

For sci fi fans a hidden gem is Time Trap. Great little sci fi flick.

Almost Famous - Semi biographical about Cameron Crowe as a Rolling Stone journalist at 13-14 following around 70s bands

I love Free Fire, I chuckled my way through lots of it.

Sorry to Bother You was pretty good, very absurd, and Lakeith Stanfield is a great actor.

I like Serenity but not as much as Firefly.


Another hidden sci fi gem is Fast Colour which stars the lovely Gugu Mbatha Raw.

Toto the hero has never once been shown on tv afaik. Amazing film.

If you like westerns with a bit of 70’s grit/naturalism have a look at Bad Company (which is on Netflix, I think). With a nice performance from a young Jeff Bridges, it’s about a bunch of kids trying to be desperado’s with generally comic/tragic results.

I have been watching some 90's Gen x/Gen Y movies - mainly for the soundtracks.

But some of them were pretty good.

Grosse point blank was based around the year I left school so the sound track is eerily reminiscent for me. Must give it another watch (listen)

Firefly is a MUST before watching it! It's only, what 10-13 eps, so not a big commitment, but sets up a lot of the plot, but more importantly the characters! Some moments in the film, I don't think would resonate as deeply without getting to know the characters through the show.

This is always my first thought when someone's looking for an under the radar recommendation... picked up the DVD in a discount bin when I was given a small Blockbuster gift cert at Christmas from a student and didn't want to spend it on a rental / snacks.

Thought, this cover looks cheese, but it's "free" and can't be that bad ... possibly one of my top 10 war flicks, easily top 20.

If you like light comedies 70s/80s films like See no Evil Hear No Evil, most of Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor movies are good. Stir Crazy is a good one also. Silver Streak.

Porgy and Bess with Sidney Poitier, directed by Otto Preminger. Music by Gershwin (what else can you ask?). In the Heat of the Night with Poitier.

Some Korean films that enjoyed, Ode to my Father.

Although well known, for the war movies enthusiasts, Is Paris Burning? is a masterpiece.

Cast a Gian Shadow with Kirk Douglas the creation of the State of Israel and its firsts battles with its neighbours, with a stunning Senta Berger.

Other SCI-FI / Time travel films
The One I Love (2014) - A low budget film about relationships and identity that starts out as a run of the mill drama but then slowly becomes something else entirely. Great story and premise and very competent acting from the two protagonists (apparently a lot of the scenes were improvised). Stay well clear of spoilers before watching.

Infinite man (2014)
Aussie film with a tiny cast but great story...

Los Cronocrimenes - Time Crimes (2007)
Spanish sci-fi thiriller about a temporal paradox (Similar kind of story to the Infinite man - see above)

Triangle (2009)
Brit sci-fi/pyschological thriller exploring themes such as deja vu and paradoxes.

Bird (1988) - Clint Eastwood's biopic of Charlie Parker.

He won a Golden Globe as best director, Forest Whitaker is superb, & Eastwood's love for Jazz just comes shining through. It's a really good film, & very rarely seen now. I think that it's on Amazon Prime in some countries and it's definitely on paid-for Youtube.

A film that you need to pay attention to when watching because the music is just so good.

That's a great shout - definitive proof you don't need a nine-figure budget to make engrossing, thought provoking science fiction.

Someone mentioned Gene Wilder. One of his earlier films, Hanky Panky (1982) is an old favourite of mine, largely for a couple of perfect comedy moments that still make me laugh now.

Does Clue (1985), with Tim Curry, count as a hidden gem? Vaguely based on Cluedo, and another old favourite. Very funny script.
