I have to agree, English lamb is the nicest I've had.bimboman wrote:Essex new spring Lamb , salt marsh at Dedham.
Slow roasted shoulder yesterday, finished the skin off under the grill .
Perfect.
Re: And the favourite cut of lamb for kiwis is..............
Have had English and Welsh lamb.
Was pretty good tbf.
Would still rate NZ lamb more though.

Welsh lamb is far superior choice, NZ lamb IS rubbish.

Awful taste of curtains off it.

Lamb is ok, but is a distant third in the great triumvirate of non avian roasts. In fact I'd put it 4th behind bambi.
Lamb shank is lovely though.

Lamb is ok over here. Though it’s all pellet fed and lacks good grass fed taste.
Hopefully this year will be better with the better weather.
Good NZ lamb not easy to get over here except in fine restaurants. Most of it has been refrigerated for ages getting here.

It’s always amused me that the taffs and keewees have this spat about which lamb is better when neither are as good as Karoo lamb.Bimboc69 wrote:Such a shame that Welsh Salt Marsh lamb is not readily available in NZ.
The superior quality of Welsh lamb would destroy NZs sheep farming industry if the NZ people ever had it.

Meh, I don’t like my meat to taste of Aquafresh. I'd rather just have an old school leg of lamb and roast spuds with some good quality gravy thanks very much.
Have very fond memories of many a weekend roasts with the family. Like many kiwis I guess.
'mericans aren't too keen on lamb however, which is a huge disgrace.

What always amuses me is people comparing the mainstream standard products against a specialty version as if it's a true comparison. How much of the welsh lamb production is salt marsh lamb for example?HKCJ wrote:It’s always amused me that the taffs and keewees have this spat about which lamb is better when neither are as good as Karoo lamb.Bimboc69 wrote:Such a shame that Welsh Salt Marsh lamb is not readily available in NZ.

Reminds me of people who say Spanish or French wine is shite because having discovered they can buy a litre of wine for a euro, that's all they try.

Meat is murder, you monsters
What's worse than murder, though, is parochialism about cooking. Sad behaviour.

The real answer is, as my physics teacher used to say, 'It all depends'.
Neck chops for a delicious stew.
Rack of lamb for a delicious roast.
Slow roasted leg for the best cold meat sandwiches known to man. Well, ok, nearly as good as slow roasted leg of wild pig cold meat sandwiches. Fair enough.
Shanks are ok.

While Welsh lamb is fine, I don't think I have ever eaten it outside of the UK.
I'm sure its available but it doesn't seem to be marketed very well.

Turkish lamb is delicious, and the fcukers are huge. Some of the ones they have rotating in kebab shops must weigh 50kg.

Yes, they arent. I think it is probably more to do with the huge beef industry there as opposed to actually the taste of Lamb.True Blue wrote:I'd rather just have an old school leg of lamb and roast spuds with some good quality gravy thanks very much.

Having said that, give me a rib eye, sirloin, beef stew or short rib anyday over lamb.
Saltmarsh lamb is very good and dinstintive although the majority of people wouldnt be able to distinguish between NZ and Welsh lamb if they were presented with both at a blind tasting.
Re: And the favourite cut of lamb for kiwis is..............
Butterfly the leg, season and marinade for 24 hours in garlic and rosemary, charcoal grill rare. Delicious

I understand that Welsh lamb is banned from the US due to higher import quality Standards and animal welfare and hygiene concerns (or some other reason I don’t know about).

Lambshanks and mash would be my favourite pub food but stands at about 10th favourite for home meals. Prime spot there would be a sunday lamb or hogget (either one) roast with the trimmings.

I use a Big Green Egg and love it. A friend of mine has a Treager and swears by it. Word of caution when smoking lamb, use a more subtle wood like apple or you'll overpower the lambMr Mike wrote:broke in a new treager smoker over the weekend with some brisket.
