Forgot about them. Good for a laugh, but I'd struggle to listen to them at any great length.

I quite enjoy Jack Parow. I never knew how well Afrikaans sounds in rap until this guy.

All this ironic/zef Afrikaans rap can get a little tedious but these are pretty catchy

That's unfair. It's entirely subjective. Obviously some are never going to go on and win grammy awards, but there are some excellent musicians on this thread. I've been listening to BS's afro-jazz recommendations all morning.

Nipper you sound like my wife. She says she hates Afrikaans music because its all shit pop but then she listens to happy clappy church music. I have pointed out to her that it's all the same just with different lyrics. All countries have bands making music in their native language covering different genres. You would most probably not like German Pop partially because you don't understand the language and therefore it does not resonate with you and also it will sound "not right". But in essential the actual music is the same if you remove the lyrics.

Personally when it comes to Afrikaans music I prefer old school Rock like Koos Kombuis and Anton Goosen. Some of the newer Rock is also not bad.

Klopjag, Glaskas, Spoegwolf, Van Coke Cartel, Zinkplaat, Bouwer Bosch, Karen Zoid, Heuwels Fantasties, One Crown, Moses Metro Man, Die Melktert Kommissie, Duislig, Die Tuindwergies, Radio Kalahari Orkes are all very good bands.

Now my memory is being jogged, I loved Boo! when they first game out. I think I saw them live at Roxys in Melville.

and Urban Creep

I saw Wonderboom play in a bar in Port Elizabeth when I lived there. Tiny gig and one of best shows I've ever been to, the place just went mental. They were part of a generation of South African bands who were immense live, but their studio albums were awful.

Been listening to Saarkie lately, an all female Afrikaans band. They're not to bad, like the rasp in the leads voice.

I've heard Wonderboom, and they are indeed awful. But I get that a band's live performance can be quite different.

Afrikaans just sounds terrible in a pop and rock sense, particularly with the cheesy production that typically accompanies it.

Rocked all the way thru varsity on Jonny Clegg, Johannes Koerkorel and Mango Grove. Now I still melllow out to Afrikaans "folk poets" such as Koos Kombuis or dare I say it Robbie Wessels when he isnt jumping around like a baboon.

All the so called "cool white bands" that have been posted here as god awful. I was in Stellenbosch when the new "punk" bands came on the scene like Fokofpolisiekar. Even then they were average pop punk wannabees.

This seems to be the most watched Afrikaans song on youtube, excluding Die Antwoord's stuff. Although not as much to my taste as the others: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXLM-vQqmGE

I second the Snapper's support for Pata Pata - he supplied the live version, so here's the studio one, synonymous for me with my 10th year of life:

Someone mentioned Paul Simon: here's Ray Lema's version of one of his songs, which I like even better than the original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6ImgD7V4aU

And this one has no vocal, but still a favourite of mine, especially for late night listening:

You’re being asked to put your best foot forward here, not post rank average pop songs.

That last one with all the hockering in the chorus

I have not heard a decent Saffer song in years. So it is quite normal for it to be shot down.

Saffer music is like eating seafood in Bloemfontein. You don't want to do it to yourself

It's subjective, people have different tastes in music. I like most music and can enjoy a good tune. I probably wont play some stuff over and over but I can appreciate it for what it is.

Who said that? No one claimed our music will set the world on fire but then again nether would NZ Jazz or Japanese rock or Dutch pop.

Hate to sound like BN but... Much of Afrikaans modern music do not do it for me. Except guys like Touch of Class, Appel, Adam Tas, a few other. Chris Chameleon (Sarel Fourie) is unappreciated. And I LOVE Yolandi Vi$$er (Die Amtwoord)

Regarding Afrikaans rap - try some of the Cape Coloured lads, they are really inventive, provocative and have a good sense of musicality, after all.

But - I mostly prefer classic music, so, I guess my opinion does not count...

I prefer classic music too - classic rock, classic blues, classic folk, classic bluegrass.

Most true SA music cater to very specific local audiences and don't really translate to wider or global audiences

I don't like most modern Afrikaans "pop songs". Seems like every attractive (usually) 20 year old girl who thinks she can sing - with auto tune - and whose dad can afford to get a CD made of these "songs" is filling up the airwaves.

Huge fan of Koos Kombuis - who I've been mistaken for on a couple occasions when I'm unshaven and wearing a bandana.

Koos Kombuis, Johannes Kerkorrel, Anton Goosen, Koos du Plessis are a few names of people who knew their stuff. Koos du Plessis is just about the Bob Dylan of Afrikaans music.

I also think Jack Parow is much better than most people think. "Meeste mense verstaan nie die point nie" (Most people don't get the point). His collaboration with Heuwels Fantasties "Tussen stasies" is one helluva song about depression.

Going back in time:

The Bats (In a shabby little hut)
Clout (Save me, Substitute)
Lesley Rae Dowling (The Spaniard)
4 Jacks and a Jill (Master Jack)

.....just to name a few.

Posting from phone so bit of a hassle to link to videos.
