Chess. The personification of racism and"White Privilege"?

Post by Dark »

Forgive me if already posted

Bit of a weird left field one. Might be them just taking the piss, don't know.

John Adams slams ABC Sydney radio show for discussion over whether chess is ‘racist’

A Sydney radio station has come under fire from a former player for organising a segment to discuss whether chess was racist.

Former Australian chess representative John Adams has slammed the ABC for organising a radio segment discussing whether the popular board game is racist.

Professional economist Adams received a call from a Sydney-based ABC producer on Tuesday asking whether the game was racist because white always moves first.

“I just received a phone call from an ABC Sydney based producer seeking a comment about the game of chess,” Adams posted to Twitter.

“The ABC have taken the view that chess is RACIST given that white always go first!

“They are seeking comment from a chess official as to whether the rules of chess need to be altered!

“Trust the taxpayer-funded national broadcaster to apply ideological Marxist frameworks to anything and everything in Australia!

“With all the drama resulting from COVID-19, I am amazed that the ABC is broadcasting on irrelevant topics!”

The move comes amid a wider debate about racist attitudes in society sparked by the death of African-American man George Floyd in the US at the hands of a white police officer.

The ensuing protests have led many to question their own behaviour and seen statues toppled, episodes removed from streaming services and brand names such as ”Redskins” changed.

But Adams condemned the ABC for not focusing on “bigger issues” amid a global health pandemic, accusing the radio broadcaster of reporting “bulls***”.

“They said with everything going on, they wanted to have a conversation about white going first — and the racial context of whether white should go first,” Adams told The Daily Telegraph.

“The response to the tweet showed that common sense is prevailing. People want the national broadcaster to focus on bigger issues.

“People are struggling with the economy, with their health, with the lockdown. They don’t want their money wasted on bulls***.”

Chess expert Kevin Bonham — who is part of the Australian Chess Federation — explained the implications if white does not move first in chess.

“There are complex patterns that require white to move first,” Bonham said.

“At the casual and club level, it does not matter which colour starts the game.

“I’ve agreed to comment on this tomorrow around lunchtime.”

The rule first dates back to the late 1800s and the emergence of the modern game, according to the website Chess.com. Before that, the player who moved first had his choice of colours.

In March 2019, world champion Magnus Carlsen and Dutch rival Anish Giri played a chess game in which the black pieces made the first move, contrary to the longstanding rules.

The players said the game was played as a “symbolic gesture” to mark the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racism on March 21st.

“We broke a rule today,” Carlsen said.

“This rule was never about race or politics, but we can break it to send a message to everyone who believes that colour should grant advantage in chess or in life.”

Giri elaborated: “It is difficult to change your mindset in a chess game with a different start. But if we can change our minds in the game, we can surely help people change their minds in real life.”

The interesting thing is the "White goes first" only started in the 1800s. Wouldn't it be more interesting to toss a coin?

Anyway the bloke is right. By dragging chess into the issue the ABC is undermining the bigger picture.

No, because if you're paying a series, the first mover advantage needs to be dispersed equally.

That is a no goer.

The kiwi chess pieces wouldn't look as cool doing the pre-chess game haka if not dressed in black.

If they wore green they would look like Irish or Saffer chess pieces making fools of themselves

You are about to trigger the greenies in the Conservationist Union of the Northern Territory. They want nothing to do with that fascist game.

Yes sure but the "white move first" is a relatively new rule to an ancient game. So why not take turns moving first then.

This massive and controversial issue can normally be solved by taking you hands and sliding the board round 180 degrees.

Makes me wonder if test cricket and Wimbledon are racist for making people wear white

Why is it only the white squares that spell out words?

Are they saying the black squares can't read?

Given the inital positions only have reflectional, but not rotational, symmetry when swapped, you'd need to change the setup of the board for the game to essentially stay the same - in other words, keep an equivalent permutation tree with colours swapped.

Basically rotating the board one quarter turn clockwise...

Even when the white guy has tried to guide them in the right direction, they can’t be trusted and he has to chase after them, but half of them veer off course anyway.

8-Ball, White ball controls the game, drives all the other colours off the table, wins by putting the Black ball in the hole...

Ice hockey might need to go with one of these instead. Anti-Trumpists would especially appreciate the change.

Yes it’s because of racism. Wait for the outrage, public outcry, and the internet to blow up as people of color “hit back.”

If you reverse it, then it is the black that gets smashed around and does all the dirty work, and the white gets to sit around waiting for all the glory at the end. You can't appease these people - absolutely everything, in every permutation, is racist in favour of whites.

I've already seen people (including an old friend :? ) have a go at 'blacklisting'. Apparently it goes back to the 1600s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacklisting

They need to allow pieces to self ID these days, why can't a pawn become a Queen between moves?
