It was a fantastic tournament.

Japan's games were truly special. Some of my favourite matches ever.

Half the tournament cancelled, a very boring winner.
It was a decent tournament, and I'm glad for Japan, but there's been plenty better,.

2003 and 2015 both blow it out of the water.

When will the Irish win a quarter final?

Probably never. We're a joke at world cups, especially Japan. That'll be a permanent embarrassment.

I'm totally neutral in assessing the quality of the rest of it.

Explain the boring winner? South Africa came from nowhere to win it, playing a kicking game through-out, but changing in the final to a more expansive game, scoring 2 great tries.

Lack of typhoon contingencies aside, it was a cracker

Just a shame that Scotland bombed both on the pitch and off it

You guys won, ye did it cynical and blood and guts, winning rugby.
You don't have to be the most flash rugby either.
Try be a little less precious about a tournament SA won.

Thought 2015 was shit tbh, with the exception of beating England.

Completely forgettable tournament.

Obviously I am biased but was the final really a classic?

England failed to get out of the changing room IMO.

It was good compared to other world cup finals. Engaging throughout and Kolbe scored the best RWC final try ever.

I'd rate it above 99, 2007 and maybe 2011.

In the top 3 RWCs with 1995 and 1999 in my opinion.

It was odd given they’d played a game less.

Perhaps a lack of battle sharpness or their usual issue with pressure.

Overall, it was an alright competition. Not much in the way of surprise, England ambushing NZ-aside.

This, but watching England do the All Blacks prison style sans lube in the semi, will live long in the wank bank.

Yeah England’s demolition job on NZ in the semi was a classic in terms of strategy.
The 12-point gap in the end was incredibly flattering to NZ.

Mostly agree but Japan v. SA was a huge moment for the sport. Not to mention the way it happened: Japan refusing to fade as so many minnows had before, forgoing the tie to go for the win, then actually having the balls to pull it off. There are tier 1 sides that wouldn't have been able to do that.

The All Blacks demolition of Ireland in the quarters was pretty good too.

IMHO there were a few reasonably even teams, and it is asking a lot to manage 3 big wins in a tournament. NZ beat Sth Africa and Ireland, who had beaten them recently, but couldn't manage it against England. All in all, I can't complain about that.

England played like they had won their final against NZ.

The final was an arm-wrestle really though. Prefer 2015 for fluent play.

One of, if not the, best.

Explain the boring winner? South Africa came from nowhere to win it, playing a kicking game through-out, but changing in the final to a more expansive game, scoring 2 great tries.
Came from nowhere?

Most of us rated them as equal favourites before the tournament.

This is why they’re boring winners... planks like you.
I love the taste of salty tears in the morning.

It was a good victory, grind it out, rugby by the numbers, classic Saffa blood and guts stuff.
Not inspiring without the stuff 95 had, but you have to admire the win anyway.

I don't know why handyman's getting so pissed.

Eh?

The Boks were playing the best rugby of the international sides last year. Their build up to the cup was great to watch, exciting young players, an attractive style... no salty tears from me. It’s silly to try and claim they came from nowhere or won against all odds. They were always in the reckoning, even after the loss in pool play.
Ok guy, I obviously trolled a bit there.
Let's face it, Handyman is a bit of a plank, but you can't just then cast a blanket over the team calling them boring winners.

Best RWC so far. Even the typhoon was a pretty exciting factor.

Two nitpicky memories.
1: no alternative for typhoon affected games, although I'm not sure what the could really have done. Be nice to think you could just move the whole gig a few hundred kilometers away and carry on as normal, I'm sure the reasons why it didn't happen are justified.
2: the high tackle drama of pool matches. That kind of madness should have been sorted between cycles so it's all clear and totally sorted heading into the showcase tourney.
