What I expect to happen is a 3rd wave, then what? Lockdown strategy can get it under control though. Thread title is appropriate. Fingers crossed that when they come out of lockdown that they can stay out of lockdown. I am certainly looking forward to when this virus is history...

Why are you sure? Because that scenario would suit your 'no lockdowns or restrictions' mantra? NSW hasn't suffered a 2nd wave. Niether has QLD. Why are you so certain that Victoria will suffer a 3rd wave by January? You sound like Scott Morrison back in MArch warning the public that if schools closed anywhere in Australia that they would stay closed for 6 months. That never happened and his comments were designed solely to scare state governments into keeping schools open.

As per my post above, what makes you so certain that Victoria will suffer a 3rd wave when places like NSW and QLD haven't suffered a 2nd wave?

Could probably call it a capillary wave. So a technical wave. But not a real wave.

Well around 120 Australians died in the first wave, so for their families and loved ones it probably felt like a "real wave". I never claimed that it was anything like what other countries have suffered, but here in Australia we now refer to it as our 1st wave.

Right. So we are still in lockdown for 5 more weeks it seems. Pretty much back to exactly where we started with my original point to Crazy Islander. Thanks for your input. Invaluable.
I know you have been opposed to any form of lockdown or restriction from the very beginning, but will you at least concede that they have worked in controlling Victoria's 2nd wave?
The lockdown regulations have been very effective in bringing the spread of the infection 'under control' (not eliminate, but 'under control'). Not sure if anyone can argue against that. Maybe Bimbo?

But it is a bit more complex than just being effective, this is because the lockdowns are also a crude, blunt instrument that have also damaged and destroyed many lives. And this is now widely acknowledged. Evidence of this can be found in many nations that are suffering their second wave (in some instances any more cases than the first wave) refusing to lockdown again, and if they are introducing some form of restriction it is nowhere near as draconian as what they introduced during their first wave, and are certainly a far cry from what we are enduring down here in Melbourne.

And we still have 5 more weeks of lockdown to go...
But I dont think we have an alternative. If we open up too early we risk the virus running free again. If we just let it go, we will see thousands die needlessly. We could try and protect the vulnerable, but pretty much every country (including our own) has failed miserably at that.
And while it kills the elderly, we are now seeing those that are younger suffering with long term symptoms such as fatigue, etc. And maybe the flu does this too, but we are seeing that Covid is roughly (based on CFR) 10 times worse. I dont think it an option.

So we need to go in to lockdown. Which sucks, and people are hurting. But what are the other options?

There are some serious questions to be asked about why we are where we are now, but the fact is we are, so we need to do what is needed to get out.
If you can't eliminate the virus then guess what? You cannot control it. We will try. But we will fail. And we will be back in lockdown in January. Here. First.
Im not sure I agree with that. All of the other states had community transmission and NSW had thousands of cases. All of the other states have it under control. There is some risk in NSW but they have a good track and trace process in place. Family tell me that SA and WA are acting as though there is no virus. NZ have covered it. So have China, after a more significant outbreak than we have now.

Bit of a weird one from Santa. It had community transmission and multiple deaths. It was a first wave.

Not saying we won’t have a third wave, we might. And if we do we need to assess what we do.

Incidentally I have probably had it so would have some immunity. So if we open up I’m not at risk.

So apparently Covid is over in NSW. Party boats are back in action and Kings St Wharf is filled again with plastic lipped over made up women and guys who all look like clones smoking and vaping and stinking up the entire area again*. :(

* I really do struggle to believe the Australia official smoking numbers stats because so many young people from the suburbs (eastern and from out west) clearly smoke, yet those numbers are supposed be lowering. That's before you get to the city where it's like walking through an astray at times where guys in $1000+ suits with $100 haircuts puff away all over their fancy threads. Smoking rant over.

Yes. At a minimum it will be another 3 weeks of no change for most Melburnians. Almost there, but this home stretch is going to be fvcking tough. My kids are on school holiday and are only allowed out the house for 2 hours a day. :((

How many cases are occurring from community transmission (ie not from aged care/health care clusters)?

The local shops were generally 80% masked before.

In my opinion (and this is easy for me because I don’t have kids) children shouldn’t be going back to school. Children won’t socially distance and they won’t take steps to minimise their risk of infection. If one gets it the whole school will be exposed. And with children not displaying symptoms it’s doubly dangerous as they won’t get picked up as being sick.

Victoria's Police are stomping on anyone breaking the law at the moment. They are patrolling in packs and have new menacing uniforms. They are probably looking into trying to find ways to arrest you for even thinking incorrectly.

If a country wants to eliminate Covid they need to make a decision as to what’s more important- user privacy or the virus?

Google and Apple have developed a technology solution that would be very effective and have minimal, but genuine privacy risk. If the govt made it mandatory for all to use this tech it would go a good way to managing the risk.

But the thing is, the govt wouldn’t have the data - they want the data for policing and defence ‘issues’. And people belihe that that they are concerned about who has their data. Of course, they’re not really - they sign away their user data 10 times a day in exchange for free stuff.

This was a direct quote from the Brett Sutton the Chief Health Officer:
Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said given the low levels of community transmission now occurring in Melbourne, he did not believe the curfew was a "proportionate" measure to keep in place.

"The sporadic, the individual community cases that we are seeing are now very small in number," Professor Sutton said.

"We are getting to one, two, three community cases per day, and so in reflecting on the obligations of the Victorian Charter and the Public Health and Wellbeing Act and the issue of proportionality, it is my view and it was the public health team's view, that the curfew is not a proportionate measure to have in place going forward."

Some Labor MP's starting to open up. It is going to be an interesting month...
Labor MPs have turned on Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews following the sudden resignation of Jenny Mikakos on the weekend.

The former Victorian Health Minister dramatically stood down shortly after Mr Andrews told the hotel quarantine inquiry she was “primarily responsible” for the botched program.

Now, a string of government MPs have hit out at Ms Mikakos’ treatment, telling the Herald Sun Mr Andrews should have stuck by her.

One Labor MP told the publication the leader was a “tyrant”.

“He is a dictator with a capital D.I.C.K,” the politician said.

“He doesn’t care about anybody but himself … Jenny knows he lied and I don’t like the way she was treated.”

The potential civil war comes as Melburnians wake up to brand new freedoms today as the state’s roadmap out of coronavirus lockdown steps up a notch.

Dan Andrews has said many, many times that Victoria is not attempting an eradication strategy. They are attempting to contain the virus. However the advice from epidemiologists to the Victorian govt is that you have to get the number of cases and the spread of infection low before you can run a containment strategy successfully. You cannot run a containment strategy when you've got 700 new cases day and widespread community transmission like Victoria had in late July/early August.
