Talking to your kids about the 'birds & bees'

I spoke to a guy in my team at work earlier this week. Apparently, he & his wife discovered that their 12 year old son had been viewing pornography. The guy's wife told him that he needs to talk to their son about the 'birds and the bees'. However, he said that his older brother can have that talk with him, as his father never told him about it when he was young.
This got me thinking about my own personal experiences when I was a kid. My father told me the 'birds & bees', however he only told me the mechanics of sexual relations, and not the emotional, social and relational side of things like he should have.
A friend of mine has already told his two boys that if they get the opportunity, they should 'F* everything'. I have another friend who recalls watching a movie with his 5 year old son, and during a rude scene his son turned to him and said 'dad, my diddle is wiggling'.
Any experiences that people want to share?

My boy, 12, will tell me when he's uncomfortable with any kind of romantic scenes, bless him.
Top Gun. Nope.

Does the dog also get blamed for someone farting?

Never had that conversation with my parents. We were having those conversations with school friends when we were 7 or so. Don't know how some kids know things but they did.

Irresponsible, and frankly dangerous advice IMHO.

Yeah I never had that talk. My mother was a huge prude and my old man isn't exactly the most attentive person. My boy is 12 years old and already 174cm with a fuzzy moustache going on. Probably should start having that talk I guess.
"Son, if you see a hot woman and you feel funny down there, slap it a few times and say 'down boy' because that's the devil rising".
That should do the trick i think. Can't think of any repercussions from that.

Its not really necessary.
Never in history has a boy got to a double digit age, been given this talk and doesn't already know that the man puts his penis in the womans vagina.

Another one for the SB weirdo opinion file.
My mother had it with me very early on (six I think) with the book Where Did I Come From. I was a pretty precocious kid so was asking questions pretty early. I had seen some dogs going at it on the field at school
Later on i got the having sex, don't do it too early but if you do wear a condom etc..

Older siblings/relatives.
I was probably 9/10 and heard some stuff from school friends. Then went and asked my dad because I didn't understand what they were talking about. Got the technical summary then and the more serious talk a bit later.
We also covered a lot of that stuff in the last year of primary school and then again in more detail in the first year of secondary school in a sexual/physical health class, which was surprisingly on the ball.

I guess I was a few years shy of double digit age when one of the older boys at school whispered this into everyone's ear with the air of one confiding a great secret. He was generally dismissed as merely trolling.
