Your most embarrassing overhyping of a player

Post by Jim Lahey »

You thought he was the shit and a dead cert to be an international stalwart for your country for the foreseeable future. Your national coach disagreed, didn’t pick him, and eventually it turned out he was right.

In terms of embarrassing ones I think I may have called for Paul Marshall to be a regular Ireland starter around 2012 whenever he was playing some good stuff tbf. But yeah, history made me look silly.

Not embarrassing but more misguided, I’m going to go with Darren Cave whenever D’arcy and BOD’s reign was at an end. Cave was an excellent player for Ulster but just didn’t have the speed to cut it at international level.

I think I had watched his only 5 minutes of excellent rugby (and I hadn't heard of him before).

In my defence, I never once believed Fozzie was an AB coaches asshole so I must know a tiny wee bit about rugby

I shot ropes over Lloyd Johannson in 2004/05. Thought the dude would be Australia's Tana Umaga.

lol no.

I thought Nick Abendanon would be England fullback for many years.

I'm still not convinced that was a wildly inaccurate assessment, except for the fact that, well, he wasn't actually selected.

I was so presumptuous about Stephen Brett's international career I once started a thread titled 'Who will be Stephen Brett's All Black understudy?'. It wasn't even about Steven Brett making the ABs, it was asking for suggestions about who would be his backup. In my defense, it was on a year that Dan Carter was on a sabbatical.

For a season or two when D'Arcy and BOD were winding down there were times where one or the other was injured for an international window, giving Cave had a massive shot at a decent run in a strong team.

He'd promptly injure his own hamstring, becoming even slower in the process.

>200 Ulster games, travelled to a RWC. He was an excellent player, just a shade below being properly good at the top of the international game. Bit more pace, and he'd probably have a few dozen caps.

I was a huge James Simpson-Daniel fan - thought he'd be our Shane Williams, only better because he created so much for other players as well as beating people and scoring for fun.

More embarrassingly I thought Ryan Lamb was a real prospect for England.

I didn't hype him, as he didn't play for my team, but I thought he was the real deal.
Shane Geraghty, after that game against France. Thought he heralded the start of England actually having skillful backs again. lol.

I don't think I'm wrong on this so wouldn't call it overhyping, but Kristian Ormsby. Should have been a 30 capper circa 2004-2007

I thought Jordan Williams was a future superstar. Based on that unreal game he had against SA under 20s and some half decent performances for the Scarlets.

I thought Lydiate was the best blindside in the world. I mean, to be fair he possibly was in 2011/2012 but in hindsight I may have over egged how good he was.

I think to be fair to Lee, he was never the same after that ACL injury. Not saying he was world class prior to that but he was young and definitely on an upward trajectory.

Should have more caps though, Keet in the centre :uhoh:

I think lots of people expected he’d make the ABs early on ... the fact that Goodwin and Taylor have test caps and he doesn’t is a bit weird.

I always though Tim Bateman would make the ABs when he was young, he was carving up but just didn’t get a break.

Whatever happened to Robbie Robinson since we're talking players who carved up at u20s level.

He had a good pro career. Just not quite skillful or composed enough to play 10 but never quick/big enough to be a world class 15. Was great in the U20's alongside Cruden though!

Dwayne Sweeney circa 2005 for the ABs. I think he's still signed to Waikato in Mitre 10 so maybe hope yet.

I used to hype the shit out of Josh Blackie although that probably doesn't count given he was supremely unlucky to play in the GOAT era and be fighting with Marty Holah for the scraps.

Someone should start a thread about best third choice players...
