Cheetahs' forwards better but the Lions backs are more dominant

Lions' defence is winning them the game so far

FT: Cheetahs u21 31-30 Lions u21

Not a typical Cheetahs side. All their tries scored from 5m lineout drives (okay, one was from a cross kick after the 5m lineout drive failed)

Questions have again been raised over Damian Willemse’s ability to command the flyhalf role after his poor performance in Saturday’s Springbok Showdown.

The 22-year-old looked uncomfortable at flyhalf in the Gold team’s 9-25 defeat at Newlands and he failed to provide his team with direction on the field.

There was a lot of talk before the game on the battle between Willemse and Elton Jantjies and it was the latter who was clearly the better of the two pivots.

Unlike Willemse, Jantjies was composed and made better decisions on the field. He also outplayed Willemse when it came to the kicking game.

Willemse was also yellow-carded early in the second half for obstructing Yaw Penxe on his way to the tryline, which resulted in a penalty try.

Despite the Stormers flyhalf’s performance, Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids is not too worried.

“We all know that Damian is a special talent and he can win you games,” Davids told reporters after the match.

“Obviously, rugby players go through the cycle where they maybe don’t have one of the best nights and he just didn’t have one of his best evenings.”

Davids believes certain factors contributed to Willemse’s performance.

“We were a bit under pressure and the conditions were a bit difficult,” Davids added.

“It’s early in the season and with his experience and with his ability, I think he is player that will bounce back and he would have learned under these conditions and the pressure that was there tonight [Saturday].

Willemse must prefer 10

For me watching from the sidelines tv and played quite a bit i can see it is as if he needs a split second more time and he has attacking ability

Therefore i am sure he misdirects himself by playing 10. He is used to playing there and therefore believes it is his position.

Rassie picked him at 15 for the WC. I believe Rassie is right

Willemse thinks he's still playing high school rugby where he is the main man in the team. Wants to do too much on his own

Bosch was baie verroes. Nohamba Sharks skrummie goed gedoen Sat.
maar sal gaan vir die Leeus in die' belangrike een

Sterk span. Lions lyk sterker as vroeer vanjaar!
Len Massyn lyk die harde steady Whiteley tipe nr8 i.p.v Dyamani.
Staan nog met 'n Leeu wegwen

I watched both under 21 games via live streaming. WP were totally outplayed by the Bulls but towards the end seemed to realise that playing fast open rugby is the best way to beat this Bulls team. The Sharks to me were a better side but seemed to be very arrogant in the way they celebrated every small "win" be it a scrum or knock on. Too much hand slapping and shouting for my liking and not enough focus on playing.

Looking forward to Friday's game between the Lions and Sharks. In my opinion the Lions selections are a little conservative. Hopefully the coach knows what he is doing. It is going to be a tough game for the Lions as the Sharks will be looking for some redemption. Hope the Lions pull off a win though......

Only three scoring factors in Am, James Venter and Ox Nche.
Werner Kok played hard superfan day and was unlucky not too score. Nohamba lively
Will there be enough firepower to beat the Lions?
With Bosch off form game 1 i think Lions are in with a chance. They played more, played the Pumas on Friday night thus game 3 for them. Attacking force in EW Viljoen from the back while Fassi Sharks is injured.
If Lions win enough ball they could win it
