Given how long they had been away the quality was much better than I expected. I was especially impressed with the Bulls

I think the Bulls, Stormers and Lions did well enough but the Sharks were disappointing. Not because they lost but the way they lost

South Africa’s first weekend after a return to rugby has claimed a number of high-profile casualties.

World Cup winner Frans Malherbe, Stormers flyer Sergeal Petersen and Sevens star Seabelo Senatla are the casualties from this weekend.

Ruan Dreyer moves from bench to start in the place of Malherbe (toe sprain) in the Gold squad for Saturday’s Springbok ‘trial’ match at Newlands.

Lions prop Carlu Sadie moves onto the bench.

Another Gold team casualty, Petersen, suffered a soft-tissue injury, while doing high-speed training last Friday and will be replaced by Courtnall Skosan.

On the Green team Sevens Bok Seabelo Senatla (hamstring tweak) was injured at the weekend. Malcolm Jaer will start and Mnombo Zwelindaba will be on the bench.

Meanwhile, Bulls and Sevens flyer Kurt-lee Arendse – who was on standby for the Green team – missed the flight to Cape Town and will not be part of Saturday’s outing.

Arendse had impressed enough to earn a call-up, but SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus said they will find out why the young man had missed the flight.

He will be afforded an opportunity at a later stage to stake a claim.

Also sidelined is talented Sharks wing Aphelele Fassi will miss Saturday’s Springbok Showdown and a possible call-up to Jacques Nienaber’s squad due to injury.

Fassi suffered an awkward fall in training last week, hyper-extending his shoulder which necessitated surgery and a three-month spell on the sidelines.

Superrugby Unlock. Pumas only team with 4 away games. Can't see them going into the Currie Cup with many points.
Round1 : Sharks didn't play well on Sat. Lions has a good opportunity to cash in and win their away game? This isn't the before Covid Lions. With overseas players Ruan Dreyer, Jaco Kriel, EW Viljoen back and the second half performance they must be pretty confident
Cheetahs vs Pumas. Can't see the Pumas topple the Currie Cup Champs in Bloem ?
Bulls vs Griquas. Will be either a big win for the Bulls ? OR a Down to the wire affair as one never know with Griquas. Bulls also a different kettle of fish with Jake White than preCovid.

People always over estimate the Griquas. Historically they preform well against the big 5 when those teams are at reduced strength due to star players being on Springbok duty. They also only get their tail up when playing in the big hole. This Bulls team will murder them.

Rassie Erasmus has confirmed Elton Jantjies would be the current ‘first-choice’ replacement for injured Handre Pollard. CRAIG LEWIS reports.

In mid-September, it was confirmed that Pollard is set to face an extended period on the sidelines after rupturing his knee ligaments while playing for Montpellier.

There remain a number of obstacles to overcome if the Springboks are to participate in the rescheduled Rugby Championship later this year, but should the defending champions take part, Pollard would not be available.

And with Pollard set to have very limited game time under the belt before the 2021 British & Irish Lions series, the Bok coaches will be keen to see how the other local flyhalves perform in the upcoming Vodacom Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup competitions.

With 37 Test caps to his name, Jantjies is the next most experienced flyhalf available to the Springboks. The 30-year-old Lions captain served as Pollard’s deputy during the 2019 World Cup, and played an integral role in helping his teammates plan for the specific threats posed by the opposition.

This was something that Erasmus also highlighted when discussing the values added by Jantjies.

‘In terms of a team man and someone who served the side, Elton really stood out at the World Cup in the way he helped us prepare. And when he’s playing with structure and a good forward foundation, he’s unbelievable. He was pushing hard for Handre’s spot [in the past].

‘So Elton is there, and then there’s Damian Wilemse who has gone to a World Cup and who can do a job at 10 and 15. Even Frans Steyn, he can slot in if needed. Then Curwin Bosch, if he gets a good run, is someone to watch.’

Erasmus added that this was the reason he was looking forward to the start of the new seven-week local competition, which would provide plenty of opportunities for players to make an impression.

‘It’s exciting that there are youngsters coming through as well. Elton would be my immediate first choice based on potential and ability [right now], but others will be pushing.’

This Saturday, Jantjies and Willemse will start at flyhalf for opposing teams in the Springbok Showdown at Newlands, while Bosch and Manie Libbok are on the bench.

Bok coach Jacques Nienaber said they look forward to seeing what they could offer.

‘Due to restrictions, there won’t be a lot of training [in the lead-up to the game], but it will be nice to see them taking control and getting the attack going forward on the front foot. We’d like to see the guys at 10 providing nice calm guidance to the forwards, and hopefully there will be good continuity in the game, with solid set pieces.’

Jantjies got the first cross kick right . Then he seem to can't stop with the tactic. Failed the next 20, giving the possession to the Stormers.

Morney was the best 10 on Saturday.

Oom have to agree with you that Morne was by far the best flyhalf on show. We have to look to the future however so no good in selecting him at this stage of his career but certainly would love him as a mentor to some of the young flyhalves.

I was disappointed in the shape of some of the Stormers players (including Augustus who needs to lose beef), they must surely have dieticians. I dont agree that the Sharks played badly, the Bulls just took them apart. On social media the Sharks supporters and pundits were talking them up as champions and the players maybe believed the press and underestimated the Bulls or the toughness of the competition.

Some of the Stormers second stringers are not Super Rugby level. I thought Nama Xaba was the best of them.

Wessels came on for the bulls last week, played a stormer
Can't comment too much on the other two but Kade Wolhuter is very much a Pollard nr10 that can stop forwards running in his channel and also an excellent kicker
Good all 3 had been pulled into boks setup to learn

Kade Wolhuter played 15 for a season in grade 11 when Mossie (Juan Mostert) was grade 12. He is a fantastic place kicker and can fit in 12 as well.

Both players will play for WP u21 against the Bulls on Sunday.

Mossie play like Lem ( Honiball). Flat and deadly defender.

Both of them follow in Damian Willemse footsteps from Paul Roos.
