PREHISTORIC SCHOOL A shoal of extinct Erismatopterus levatus captured in a fossil that dates to the Eocene Epoch (at least 50 million years ago).

Suggests that schooling behavior in fish may have evolved tens of millions of years ago.

It's still perfectly relevant when comparing bike and car fatality levels.
Fatalities per trip would probably be better as a metric for all transport types.

At risk of appearing thick, surely comparing 'passenger fatalities' is kind of flawed when a car is capable of holding far more passengers and tends to carry passengers far more regularly? Surely the relevant metric is how often each vehicle is involved in fatal accidents on a per journey basis?

Fair comment.

But distance is the correct proxy for exposure to harm. 1 trip for 10 minutes has far less exposure to harm than 1 trip of 10 hours, so giving short commute journeys on bikes the same weight as inter city transit in cars will also be flawed. Passenger fatalities can't be flawed - that's what the guy is measuring. Its numbers of people dying by mode of transport, not how many fatal accidents there are, so it's irrelevant how many a car holds versus a plane or a bike.

To equate all these modes of transport, distance travelled, with some flaws for outliers like space travel to Alpha Centauri, is still a reasonable measure.

+1. Indestructible, keeps stuff hot for hours and hours. Expensive and pretty heavy, but the best.

No, it's still wrong, but perhaps less wrong than some. A 10 hour plane journey is likely to have lower exposure to risk that a 10 minute bike ride in a city due to the lack of stuff in the way.

The issue is that different modes of transport have different sweet spots and therefore are used differently. You can't rely on direct comparisons because they aren't solving the same problem.

My niece kipped like that halfway up a ridiculous sheer face in the Patagonias while a storm raged, with winds so strong they dislodged rocks from higher up. She said it was pure luck that one did not hit their tent as they slept.

She's pretty relaxed, almost fatalist, about these things She's been back a couple of times since so it obviously did not scare her off.
