A historian says demolishing the Catholic cathedral is a tragic loss for Christchurch.
The category 1 Heritage building, was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquake and hasn't been used since. The church has announced the building was unable to meet a 12 point test when it came to costs and safety. Historian Anna Crighton says it truly is a disastrous decision. She says it means the loss of more heritage from the city. Crighton says as well as the three bishops buried under the cathedral, there are specially commissioned art works and tapestries that may be lost.

Thanks for update FOG......the city access seems to be improving......as are the roads through Riccarton!
With half the Prebbleton overbridge now in use, it allows a good view of the new southern motorway progress......will be a great asset when completed.

I saw a news report on Lancaster Park demolition this week, and it was being reported that it was about to remove the rubble after the last of the high bits have been dropped.

I was impressed with what was being recycled from the demo job in North Canterbury, and how steel was being turned around.

It was good to hear that the park area was being retained for recreational purpose.......look forward to reading about more nailed plans when they come out.

It's certainly getting there. I was also impressed by how much of the material coming out of the stadium demolition is being recycled.

I enjoyed that, the red zone looks rather cool. Would be interesting if they just let it go back to nature.

Already covered in FOG’s Christchurch in pics thread but worthy of a thread of its own and more than a one word comment, this is a unique study in natural reclamation of an urban area. A massive slice of urban area abandoned, deconstructed and left to nature... with every chance now of being left as parkland to rehabilitate naturally.

Interesting.

I know nothing about this piece of land, but based on near total ignorance I find that I agree with Colin Muerk.
This was the outcome that Dr Colin Meurk, an urban ecologist, had feared. Early on, he had mooted leaving some of the damaged buildings behind, allowing wildlife to take over the ruins, while fostering the regrowth of native species; an approach based on minimal human intervention.

The old stadium is no more. Nice that they have managed to recycle quite a bit of it. Video in the link.
