Rugby NAMA thread Revisited Rugby
Re: Rugby NAMA thread Revisited Rugby
This is NPHET against the government. NPHET have played what they think is their trump card. If the government accede, NPHET will have us in lockdown until the Spring. If the government tell them to fúck off, NPHET will have been called out as calling "wolf" one too many times.

NPHET didn’t have manners put on them weeks ago. Martin bottled it. This was lost then.camroc1 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 10:58 pm This is NPHET against the government. It’s really no coincidence that Holohan is back.

A quick vox pop of my myriad whatsapp threads indicates 0% support for the NPHET. Would have been near 100% for the initial lockdown.Blackrock Bullet wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 11:04 pmNPHET didn’t have manners put on them weeks ago. Martin bottled it. There's a long term danger that institutions come out with a tattered reputation. It's fun to dismiss us as piss soaked weirdos but we're the centre ground(and it's not just us).Gavin Duffy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 10:52 pmLevel 4, level 5 - makes no real difference, very few people will be listening.MunsterMan!!!!! wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 10:51 pm Any one have any idea when a decision will be made? Why are Donegal and Derry going off the charts with infections?

Re: Rugby NAMA thread Revisited Rugby
They are not necessarily Covid infections, They are positive PCR results. Belfast is testing higher than Derry. But people want to link Derry and Donegal as a hotspot.
The bulk of the positives are Pillar 2 testing in the community. Comes in at a solid 3-5% of the total number of tests.
Re: Rugby NAMA thread Revisited Rugby
We're probably doing a lot more tests now than then as well. Think they were targeting 15k a week back then and often struggling to get there. Now they can do 15k a day.

You can still fúcking do shit and maintain some social responsibility, but gathering in crowds like that is moronic. Even if the spread from it is minimal, it's awful optics and only encourages Tony to give the entire class detention to make a point.

Tony has been at home with a very sick relative for weeks - it’s not surprising that he’d have a fairly hardline view of the situation. We have a panel of people who are all public sector employees and entirely insulated from the impending mother of all recessions - this is why we elect politicians and not public health officials to run the country

All the Tony is our dad memes going around. Fück off. For all of you crapping on about a few lads having a parade when do you think we stop with this shit? November? Nope. December? Nope. March? Nope. When we have a vaccine. Probably months after that. That could be 12 months away. Optimistically. What did we do before we had a flu vaccine? Fück all is the answer bar GP's telling Bridie to be careful and wrap up. Get your shit together and step away from the curtains.

Cases went down because you locked people at home. They really didn’t do anything. We were told to stay home and save lives whilst they boosted capacity and built a South Korean level test and trace system. Instead when given months of the summer on contact tracing with fudge all cases, NPHET met up to tinker with rules that they were never really tracking the efficacy of.
I put up worries on here in April as things didn’t stack up. There were 3 conditions at the time that Varadkar had vaguely set for the end goal and despite us getting there, there was little to no discussion of any reopening of the economy. Too many people got a bit drunk off the the feel good vibes people had as we “crushed the curve”.

Taking the example of that parade - you can't punish everyone who was there, if you only punish some people it's seen as unfair.
The government are in a tough position, they need to change public opinion. Loads of people are against restrictions now so they need to be unified and clear in their messaging like they were back in March, but that's never going to happen now.
Re: Rugby NAMA thread Revisited Rugby
If nothing else, the government should be absolutely livid that this was leaked to the press in time for the Monday morning news cycle, before government was informed. It is a blatant attempt to bounce the government into a particular action, which is not the job of NPHET, and whoever leaked should be dismissed from the committee for starters.

I must admit that it's quite funny that the day Holohan came back that he went to this way of "doing business". It is no surprise this happened, NPHET have been in a little PR tiff with Varadkar for 6 weeks now. That Currency article sent them over the edge.

Lots of people are against restrictions but I still think the majority of the public will support NPHET recommendations. A huge section of the population either have an underlying health condition or have a close family member in that position. Regarding that parade, as an example. I'd like to see something fairly severe like a significant fine for the club, or central funding withdrawn for a year. Stripping them of the title seems extreme, but there needs to be some accountability where stuff like this happens.
If it's students on the lash in Galway, it's a lot harder to point the finger, as the university is hardly responsible for how people behave in their own time.
My mum is quite upset at this on a personal level. She was already restricted to window visits to her 94 year old dad in the home, now it'll be nothing at all. And she's noticed that his general disposition is markedly improved when he has regular interaction with family members. He's improved massively since he was isolated during lockdown (recovering from hip surgery and my granny died at the same time).
Now he'll be back to text messages read out by the staff. It's fúcking shit.

The NPHET superfans are crazy, it's at football fan level of defensiveness. The idea that they are beyond reproach is hilarious, the same eejits who said no Level 3 on Thursday but then went for Level 5 on the Sunday. They've lost a serious amount of credibility in the last month, it's quite clear they have no idea how to properly control the virus.

NPHET are supposed to have a much more active role though, it's just just advice. They are supposed to be directing the testing programme. The goal was to get to South Korean levels but we find out in September that they haven't been doing that.de_Selby wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 10:45 amIt's been said before, but NPHET have been in the spotlight too much in general. It's a joke. Someone should have resigned over that at the very least, instead we were forcing EU trade commissioners out.
