Aussie underworld f*cked

Post by Demilich »

The cops planted a Trojan Horse encrypted comms app AN0M into the Oz underworld and then monitored all messaging on it for three years.
Various people accused of drug dealing and money laundering will appear in Auckland and Hamilton courts on Tuesday, after a massive police operation targeting transnational organised crime.

The sting saw dramatic raids by armed police spanning the North Island overnight.

The head of the national organised crime group, Detective Superintendent Greg Williams, is set to brief media in Auckland on the Kiwi side of the international operation.

Across the Tasman, Australian media are reporting significant developments in “Operation Ironside”, a large multinational operation targeting organised crime.

New Zealand police have not confirmed whether raids in this country relate to Operation Ironside.

A “world exclusive” report in Sydney's Daily Telegraph said police tricked organised crime figures with the help of intermediaries into using a supposedly safe chat app called AN0M – but detectives could read every word.

“Australia’s underworld has been smashed by a genius police sting which tricked Mafia, bikie and global gang heavyweights around the world,” Newscorp's national investigations editor Ellen Whinnett wrote.

“In the largest blow ever landed on organised crime in the southern hemisphere, more than 100 people have been charged, 3366kg of drugs and $35.8m in cash seized, 72 firearms confiscated and 1650 devices with the encrypted app Operation Ironside burst into the open.”

Raids on users of the AN0M chat app continued across the globe overnight, including in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands, it was reported.

The newspaper said an Australian Federal Police (AFP) tech expert came up with the plan “over a few beers with FBI agents back in 2018” to crack the encrypted messages.

AFP then planted devices pre-loaded with AN0M into the hands of criminals via several underworld intermediaries.

The app gave police real-time access to the messages of 11,000 people, including 1650 in Australia, unaware cops were watching them discuss drug dealing and murder, it was reported.

Among the gangs targeted by the raids in Australia are the Commancheros, which are also active in New Zealand.

Australian detective superintendent Des Appleby told The Courier Mail that police had been secretly listening to the deepest secrets of underworld figures and drug lords for almost three years.

“I think they’ll be shocked to their core that they’ve been stooged this badly. All their thoughts and plans, schemes, and they’re all in the hands of the police,” he told the newspaper.

The app was unwittingly distributed by fugitive Australian drug trafficker Hakan Ayik, after he was given the device by undercover agents.

Ayik, 42, recommended the app to criminal associates who would purchase the device pre-loaded with AN0M on the black market, allowing them to send messages, distort messages and take videos.

And who was it that kept saying that the police in both countries were soft on gangs and crime?

Now we need the judges to play ball when it's time for sentencing.

Yep.

From the same article:
AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said that Ayik was a marked man and should turn himself into Australian authorities.

"Given the threat he faces, he's best off handing himself into us as soon as he can.

"He was one of the coordinators of this particular device, so he’s essentially set up his own colleagues."

This is such an amazing story. The more you read it the more you just go "wow".

They create an app that requires certification from an existing user, promised 100% encryption, and let it loose in criminal circles and just watched the messages roll in. Anyone who was anyone in these circles used phones with this app....hahahahahahahaaaaaaa.

Also, that dude is so very dead.

Yeah, he's screwed and the cops clearly have no love for him as they've hung him right out in the breeze to dry nicely, when usually they'll make some effort to protect those who help them.

I was reading a story on that guy and a bunch of other gang-lords (head of Hells Angels, head of Commancheros etc) yesterday, and all of them were living overseas. Think that guy is in Turkey, so possible he'll be a bit safer there (I'm sure that they could still get to him, but likely to be slightly more manageable than dealing with the wave of threats he's got to be facing in Oz). Others were in Greece and the UAE (which seems like an odd place for drug lords to hide out).

The main thrust of the article was that they had all come together to create a cartel to channel drugs through Thailand. Which answered a long standing question I had - I was on a flight home from Bangkok (via one of the Oz airports) a few years back and was sat behind a couple of blokes with Hells Angels t-shirts on, commemorating the establishment of their Thailand chapter that week. It did seem to be a bit of an unlikely place for Oz HA to be forming a new chapter - but it turns out it was to do with drug trafficking from the golden triangle.

I remember years ago sitting in a little street bar in Patong talking with a few of the local expats about exactly that issue... Aussie gangs setting up local chapters. All of the usual peripheral 'business interests' were relevant... tattoo shops, Harleys, girls and the drug trade.

We were kinda laying casual bets on how they'd go setting up in competition with the local specialists.

Could it, paradoxically, be the opposite? By putting his name out there, the police are also saying, we are paying attention to him, so you better stay clear?

I remember watching a documentary about Joseph Pistone (the FBI agent Donnie Brasco was based on) and they asked the FBI, why didn't the mafia go after him once they knew who he was?

The FBI agent said that there was a contract out on his life, but the head of the agency went around to the bosses of the 5 families and said if you touch him we will f ucking end you.

Dunno, just thinking out loud.

Imagine the discipline required to pull this off. Cops from how many countries and agencies? How many crimes must they have let happen to wait for the big pay-off? How many careers could have been made along the way with a raid or a bust? Just the willpower to resist that kind of political pressure is extraordinary.
