Swimming is an absolute joke..too many events that one person can seriously compete in
I disagree. All the strokes and events have immense history and are worth persisting with, and McKeon is a freak. It's not like 7 medals is a normal thing to do. The only races I'd consider scrapping are the mixed relays which are only new this year. Swimming is a very difficult sport to monetise for athletes so I cannot begrudge them winning a few medals.
We will have to disagree then

Is there any other sport in the Olympics where a single athlete has a realistic chance of winning 4 or even 5 events..no there isnt

And dressel won 5 golds in the men's as well

I know these are the exceptions and not the rule ..but still it's crazy
There are other sports where it is possible. Record is 6 for Gymnastics for example, 5 for athletics and fencing.
Swimming is a joke with the number of events. It is not a very popular sport (unlike running or cycling) but has events at so many distances and strokes. It is also boring to watch.
It gets much better ratings than cycling in the markets that matter.

I don’t think they’ve troubled the Dutch goal all game. It’s like Russia v NZ in the 7s.

It’s so comprehensive I flicked over to an artistic/synchronised swimming routine hoping that might change our fortunes.

No amount of Dutch totty can keep me interested. I’ve switched over as well. NZ must be in a rebuilding phase or something; didn’t they win the CG gold in 2018?

To be fair, bar reigning champions Great Britain, New Zealand have kept the Dutch to their lowest score so far

Eurosport commentator being patronizing here . "Be good for New Zealand get a goal here, really be nice they can go home with something, a feel good factor of their Olympic experience". I mean NZ almost got a medal in Rio and he's talking like they are some amateur side just happy to be there.

So if there is a joke of an event, it's horse dancing.

Why just horse dancing, why not dog or pig dancing?

Netherlands women just too good. Will face GB or Spain next. If GB, Netherlands would have beaten each semi-finalist already this Olympics. Can't see any one else for the gold, though India seem inspired. I'm still stunned they beat Australia.

Riding a dancing ostrich would be something I'd watch.

Circus animals are banned in most of the UK, not sure why this is exempt.

I did think your women's footballers should have done better. But while they scored a lot, weirdly, they took the position defending wasn't required.

That's normal Dutch football. And they went out on penalties against the USA - not great, but hardly embarrassing.
The performances in the female cycling road race and the male rowers were more obvious examples.

I can sort of understand why people enjoy ladies' beach volleyball. But the game itself is boring as a spectator sport.

Sprinters jogging to the line is right up there with the one handed try putdown in my pet hate list.

Imagine throwing 5 years of hard work down the toilet due to arrogance.

Played poorly. If you can't at least take a shot during a penalty corner, you run the risk of losing the game... which they did. Very poor penalty corners all tournament. Paid the price unfortunately.

No point complaining that there's too many swimming events to win. Sick of Aussies or Yanks winning too many swimming events? Get better and stop them.

After all the debate turns out to be a damp squib.. done more for trans sport than if she had dominated ..

Await the debate in 3 and 7 years time as more trans women come to the fore at elite level.

Swimming is a joke with the number of events. It is not a very popular sport (unlike running or cycling) but has events at so many distances and strokes. It is also boring to watch.
A lot of people do swim however, it's a popular hobby and has had a lot of of genuine strokes. It is also some of the biggest ratings on US TV come each Olympics. Sure due to it being a guaranteed source of US gold. But most countries get their highest sport ratings with success.

My only issue with the number of swimming events is sports like Rowing, Cycling etc have had to cut men's events to equalize the numbers between the sexes. Swimming has not. His is largely because Swimming gave women a lot of events long before other sports, coming out as winners for equality, but no doubt it's the US TV influence as well.

IMO I'd have told sporting bodies to re-organize events and include the extra women's events in the same time period. Plenty of dead time between events so it's feasible.
I think the reason why is comparing to say another medal-laden sport in track & field, the limit to the size of the Olympics is not the number of medals handed out, it's the number of athletes and hangers-on. in track & field people really only focus on one event. You have a handful that do a couple and then your sprinters also get to do a relay, but by and large they specialize in only one event. In swimming, people routinely do 3 or so. So you have more events but the number of people competing does not increase much.
