Migrants are welcomed. Asylum seekers are supposed to claim it in the first country they reach. These are failed asylum seekers in the EU who are trying to get into the uk illegally to try again.

France is no better than belorussie.

It says they are supposed to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. This is a big problem as most migrants want to get to Germany and to a lesser extent, Britain. It means they are in Limbo in France and partly why are willing to take the risk of getting to Britain.

Decathlon have actually stopped stocking any type of boats. True story.

Easier to get house / schooling / healthcare for nowt in uk
Iraqi et al more likely to speak English than french
France (eu) keener now to foist some economic migrants onto the uk
Some distant cousin is an Uber driver in Walsal

But asylum seekers should really be taken in at the first safe country they reach, and not get waived through the Balkan’s and Italy and Greece, through Spain or France, to the uk.

Very sad situation and it is only the beginning.

I see the usual suspects are all over this. They were a lot less noisy when those migrants were dying in the Méditerranée. The problem is closer to home now.

You can’t expect the frontier countries to take all of the migrants whilst Britain by virtue of geography gets to tut tut much poorer countries struggling to deal with the problem. This is a complex worldwide issue that isn’t going to be solved by blaming the foreigners

Indeed.

Neighbouring countries already take in 86% of refugees worldwide.

To say your country is not concerned because it is 20 miles further away from the source is just plain stupid.

As I understand it, most of these people are coming to join families. Having a support network already in place should they get to the UK seems to be worth dealing with dodgy Albanians and dodgy French coppers.

IMO its not relevant whether they are economic migrants or asylum seekers or whatever. They are trying to get a better life and the fact that they are being exploited and dying in presumably terrifying circumstances is a terrible state of affairs that all of Europe should be embarrassed about.

Agree with the point that remote geography should not insulate countries like UK/Ireland/Scandinavia

20 miles from France, but they have already travelled through numerous countries before they get to Calais, which you conveniently ignore. They are not really refugees judging from the direction and destination of their migration , and seem to ignore some other countries that are geographically and culturally a lot closer to their homeland, and are safe.

Ireland should take some of these dinghy chaps in , am sure they will be made welcome. Or Italy. Or Austria . Or any of the other countries that are not ‘much poorer’ than uk, and have already travelled through to get to Calais.

Uk won’t miss anyone stupid and desperate enough to get into a dinghy in Nov and risk their lives and their kids and unborn , when they have just left several countries that could give them at least as good future life.

I think we should take in a lot more. We have a pensions crisis on the horizon and nobody is having large families. Anyone determined enough to get here should be welcomed with open arms I’d take them over the 20 year old here sitting at home playing PlayStation on the dole. We would be absolutely f**ked without the young migrants from Eastern Europe

Yeah, they're so desperate. Who wouldn't need to escape the tyranny of France/Italy/Greece/every other bloody country they've travelled through? They must be terrified for their lives....

Maybe Ireland could put them all on one of it's big new shiny ferries and take them to Cork? You lads have plenty of space and you're far richer than the UK, being in the EU and all that.

I can confirm I do not think I am a good guy, nor even an especially nice one. I can be good company but that's a different thing.

That said Brexit has made this harder, and that's on those who lied about the consequences and were stupid enough to vote for it. Only made it harder mind, it's not like there weren't issues before 2016, and it's not like those issues would go away if we rejoined

Judging from those racist attacks and taxi protests against Ghanaians etc in Ireland, your view there is the small minority. A quick google says 1516 asylum applications were received by Ireland last year , that’s tiny. Another source says 6-7k a year pre Covid , still doesn’t seem very much compared to uk 132k refugees , 77k pending cases and 5k stateless.

I’m just quick Googling here so not putting them as FACT but just indicating that initially , Ireland does not actually seem to be taking many of these poor wee lambs on board.

Duff is on his own here tbf. Not much appetite here for taking in refugees, even more particularly in relation to low skilled economic migrants. Our geography and lack of direct flights usually dissuades them from coming here. I think it is strange though that so many would want to go to the UK over Ireland as they'd probably be financially better off coming here. I can only assume it's a family thing?

FWIW, I think the borders of southern European countries should be reinforced and no-one let in without proper paperwork. The NGO vessels in the Med are as guilty of trafficking as the smugglers operating out of North Africa.

They also bang on about their wealth (ignoring purchasing power) - so really should chip in for more guards, boats etc or else stfu, and we all know how well Irish keep quiet about any topic.

Interesting debate on BBC this morning. Both the Calais MP and the Border Force guy said that the UK far from being a hostile environment was seen as exceedingly generous to refugees when you take into account free housing, free health care and free schooling. The Calais MP said we needed to get a lot tougher and pass tough new laws. You could see the steam coming from Naga Munchetty's ears.

The Border Force Guy also rubbished the idea that they were refugees. Again, you could see the steam coming from Naga Munchetty's ears.

What does Ireland do with regards taking in refugees? Does it take in the same percentage as other EU 'frontier countries' or 'by virtue of geography' does it just look on from the sidelines and 'tut tut' the British?
Duff is on his own here tbf. Not much appetite here for taking in refugees, even more particularly in relation to low skilled economic migrants. Our geography and lack of direct flights usually dissuades them from coming here. I think it is strange though that so many would want to go to the UK over Ireland as they'd probably be financially better off coming here. I can only assume it's a family thing?

FWIW, I think the borders of southern European countries should be reinforced and no-one let in without proper paperwork. The NGO vessels in the Med are as guilty of trafficking as the smugglers operating out of North Africa.
Agree with this 100% also if the migrants come to Ireland I would be willing to be folding money that the vast majority would end up in London quicker than you can say "Common Travel Area"

They also bang on about their wealth (ignoring purchasing power) - so really should chip in for more guards, boats etc or else stfu, and we all know how well Irish keep quiet about any topic.

Perhaps. That is the main crux of the issue though - why do they all want to get to the UK?

Several on this thread (not just Irish) seem to think geographic location is irrelevant , and the direct flights thing isn’t really an issue for those people willing to pay a trafficker for a dinghy spot.
Genuine economic migrants would not really be affected by direct flights, and there should always be a method to welcome migrants of appropriate skill set and needs.

I completely agree with your last paragraph , even when uk was in the Eu - I don’t personally think this topic is especially relevant or affected by brexit

The crazy thing is that these guys are making their way through safe, developed countries and will then pay a substantial sum to risk their lives to try and get to the UK - the message has to get out from the UK government that coming to Britain illegally will result in immediate deportation.

Benthos wrote: Thu Nov 25, 2021 12:27 am Right, this isn’t a Brexit rant - I said the same when we were in...

Why can’t the EU:
- get all member heads together
- agree a fund/secretariat which, to take the pressure off Greece, Italy and (to a lesser extent) Spain, handles all border issues at the southern border, including patrolling the Med and running transit camps
- get each member country to agree to X refugees p.a.
- process the refugees crossing the Med, allocating and transporting them as per the above agree quotas
- reconvene HOGs when quotas filled, or (last resort) send the surplus back
Isn’t that what a union of countries should be doing..?

*ducks*

PS the Brits should fund and contribute to the above process, Brexit or no Brexit
I can't disagree with such a system, pending details of course. In a similar way European countries could and should invest in facilities in the borders outside of Europe and close by, having them processed there but with investment in decent accommodation. In this day and age with all the information available there is little reason why most applications can't be determined as genuine or not. Why do we act as if we don't have tons of information about events around the world at the touch of a button.

But the fact is to much claims of refugees isn't about reaching a safe country, they want to reach a particular destination for economic benefits. Traffickers take advantage of this.
